Why does the Hispanic vote matter more than before in the US elections?
The next presidential elections in the United States are pretty much around the corner. When are the next presidential elections? On November 3, 2020, and this time, the Hispanic vote matters more than ever.
According to an article published by Diario Libre on September 23, Hispanic voters in the US have become increasingly highly represented. They are leaning more toward the Democratic Party.
“Electorate profiling analyzes published by the Pew Research Center indicate that Hispanic voter gains are particularly strong in the southwestern United States, where states such as Nevada, California, and Texas have seen rapid growth in Latino voters’ turnout throughout 18 years”, the website said.
For this presidential election, the same trend is observed in states such as Florida and Arizona, considered crucial for deciding the presidential election 2020.
“In Florida, two out of ten eligible voters in 2018 were Hispanic, nearly double the proportion in 2000. And in Arizona, Hispanic adults made up about a quarter (24%) of eligible voters in 2018, up to eight percentage points since 2000”, Diario Libre continued.
Why has the Hispanic electorate grown for these presidential elections?
According to the article above, one of the reasons for the growth of the Hispanic electorate is that many children of immigrants born in the United States have come of age or have been naturalized, so now they can vote.
“The 12.4 million Hispanics who turned 18 between 2000 and 2018 accounted for 80% of the growth among eligible voters in the population during those years”, the Pew Research Center said in an analysis entitled “The changing racial and ethnic composition of the American electorate.”
The increase described by the center has been constant over the last 18 years: from 2000 to 2010, its participation increased by four percentage points (from 24% to 28%), while from 2010 to 2018, its participation increased by 5 points ( from 28% to 33%).
