People from El Salvador that are in the United States with Temporary Protected Status, TPS, will be able to benefit from an extension of their status for one more year, meaning early 2021.
A little over two weeks ago, the US and Salvadoran governments announced that from this extension about 200,000 Salvadorans living in the United States will benefit. This means that they will have their work permits extended through January 4, 2021.
This extension arrives after lawsuits that challenged the termination of TPS were concluded and as a consequence, the Trump administration agreed on giving Salvadorans an additional year.
According to Los Angeles Times “Salvadoran Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill, in Washington to sign the agreements, said Salvadorans are being given ‘breathing room’ to find a permanent solution that will eventually earn them residency or citizenship.” Many of these Salvadorans have resided in the country for over 20 years, they have built families, are homeowners and have settled down.
However, this extension comes with agreements of El Salvador’s government with the United States related to border security, biometric data sharing and asylum processing, although Hill denied that the country she represents was being rewarded in some way for this cooperation.
This program was initially created for helping people fleeing natural disasters or civil unrest. When the extension comes in force El Salvador will be considered a “Safe Third Country” to where asylum seekers at the US border could be sent to apply for protection if they were crossing through El Salvador while fleeing from their home country.
