According to the Department of Homeland Security, the Biden administration plans to speed up deportations for some migrant families who cross the US-Mexico border, as they said on July 26.
These deportations are known as expedited removals, and they allow immigration authorities to remove an individual without a hearing before an immigration judge.
Who will be affected by these proceedings?
The proceedings will apply to “families who are not swiftly expelled under a pandemic-related border policy,” as you can read in an article written by CNN.
President Biden also reiterated that the administration is doing what it can to tackle the root causes of migration.
“Attempting to cross into the United States between ports of entry, or circumventing inspection at ports of entry, is the wrong way to come to the United States,” DHS said in a statement cited by CNN.
They also mentioned that the Biden administration is working to build a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system; therefore, they are taking necessary steps to improve lawful proceedings at ports of entry and reforms to the asylum system.
Families seeking asylum
The Biden administration also said that they are planning to speed up court cases for recently-arrived migrant families seeking asylum.
When immigrants have a chance to make their cases in court, they can ask judges to allow them to stay in the US by arguing they qualify for asylum or other legal options. This is why consulting with an immigration attorney may be a good idea for you to have better chances with your immigration case.
