Are you voting for the US presidential elections for the first time? Here are the requirements

The next presidential elections in the United States will be taking place on November 3rd, 2020. If it’s your first time voting because you have reached the age of majority or have become legally authorized to vote, you will want to know what the requirements are for taking part in this event.

Although the country is being largely affected by the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic, with more than 6 million confirmed cases and over 200,000 deaths (according to the John Hopkins University count), the presidential election 2020 will occur.

This electoral process involves many people participating for the first time, either in person or placing their vote via mail.

What are the requirements to vote for the first time in the United States?

• Be a US citizen (born or naturalized);
• Meet the electoral requirements of the state of residence;
• Be 18 years old on election day (November 3rd).

The voter must also register to vote before the deadline that each state has established, except North Dakota, where registration is not required. Some states close the voter registrations up to a month before election day. Others keep it open until the day before. Remember when the next presidential elections will take place: November 3rd, 2020.

Who cannot register to vote on November 3rd?

The people cannot vote on the presidential elections when they are foreign citizens, including legal permanent residents with a Green Card. In fact, it is considered a crime to register to vote in the United States if you are not a US citizen.

Some people convicted of serious crimes cannot vote as well as some people with specific mental disabilities. However, the rules are different by state, so you should check the laws of the state you live in. Finally, US citizens residing in Puerto Rico and other US territories cannot vote for President in the general election.
