US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the largest federal law enforcement agency within the Department of Homeland Security, and it announced a few weeks ago that hundreds of migrants will be able to access daily appointments through the CBP ONE app at a frontier point in the US border with Mexico.
CBP is responsible for managing, controlling, and protecting the nation’s borders, including enforcing immigration and customs laws, and this app serves as a single portal for various CBP services.
According to a news report published by Voz de América, the number of available appointments increased from 1,250 to 1,450 per day, which equals about 50% more compared to the beginning of May when Title 42 ended.
What is CBP ONE used for?
CBP offers a range of services aimed at facilitating international trade and travel while ensuring security and efficiency. Some of these services include managing the wait times at borders, providing information about ports, and offering trusted traveler programs; therefore, to streamline these services and provide a seamless experience, CBP developed CBP One™, a mobile application that serves as a unified platform for accessing various CBP services.
At present, CBP One™ offers a diverse range of services tailored to different types of users, with the goal of enhancing the efficiency and smoothness of the travel process. Land travelers can take advantage of the app by pre-submitting their traveler information, a feature that can expedite their border crossing experience when entering the United States.
Similarly, air travelers can utilize the app to request inspections for biological and agricultural products upon their arrival in the US, ensuring compliance with customs and agriculture regulations.
What should we expect from CBP in the coming months?
Immigration authorities stated that they will continue to provide a safe, humane, and orderly process so that non-citizens can access entry ports. There, CBP officials receive and verify migrants’ information to determine admissibility on a case-to-case basis.
Try Miller, a high-ranking officer in the CBP, said that they increased the number of available appointments in entry ports for the second time in less than two months through upgrades in the operations’ efficiency and programming.
The US government also says that the app has helped decrease the number of illegal entries to the country by 64%.
Currently, appointments are available for people on the Mexican border with the US and those in the country’s center areas. They are assigned randomly, but those waiting longer are usually considered first.
