The immigration system is a slow one and if you applied for your visa a while ago and still have not received a response, you may be feeling a little bit nervous about whether you have been approved or not. But, do not worry, there are ways you can figure out what is going on with your case.

If you applied to immigrate to the United States under the family-based or the employment-based card category you have to wait from a few weeks to several months until you hear back from the office that is processing your case which will be a USCIS, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, office.

Delays are completely normal, so do not panic just yet, you need to be a little bit more patient. When you submitted your petition to the USCIS, they gave you a receipt. In it, you will find a 13-digit number that begins with three letters (that identify the office handling the application) and it will help you trace your case through the system.

This number is sent to you a few days or weeks after you have submitted your application, however, if you still have not received it, call the USCIS or email their contact center to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

How to check your immigration status online

You can easily check the status of your immigration case by going to the USCIS webpage and clicking “Case Status Online” where you will need to enter your receipt number. You can also create an account on that same page and sign up for case updates from USCIS.

Also, be sure to check the USCIS Check Case Processing Times page where you can learn how long these offices take to process the different applications. If you find out that your case is taking longer than usual, contact the USCIS as soon as possible.
