The number of new removal cases is surpassing the number of closed cases during the 2021 fiscal year. With more than 315,000 new cases, the situation is worsening, according to an analysis by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), from the University of Syracuse, in New York.
The 315,000 new cases are more than double the cases that have been closed so far, which makes the situation very complicated.
By the end of September 2021, when the fiscal year closed, the number of pending cases reached almost 1.5 million, more than the entire population of San Diego, California (the eighth larger city in the US).
EFE reported that according to court records that only 2% of the new cases during the 2021 fiscal year were related to alleged criminal activity on the immigrant’s part, besides a possible illegal entry to the country.
They also mention that Los Angeles county has most resident cases with pending removals, and Mexicans are on top of that list.
Also, of the 144,000 closed cases this year, in 29.7% of them, the immigration judges issued expulsion and voluntary departure orders. Only 20.6% of immigrants, including unaccompanied children, had a lawyer to help them with their situation.
Having a lawyer by your side during this process is always helpful since they will be able to guide you and counsel you throughout the entire situation, and it is someone who has your best interests at hand.
